Cam adjustors going out are a big issue for that motor. If they go out, it's about an $8K repair. See if it's been done already.

A chipped 5-spd 1.8T B5 is just about as fast as the W8 and 10,000 times more economical to drive around. Just my $0.02. I owned an drove an 01 Passat 1.8T 5-spd from new till 100k miles and 8 years...it was reliable, cheap on gas and decently quick for the day. I auto-crossed it, tracked it and did very minimal mods (chip, springs/shocks, anti-sway bars) and it was great.
Here are some examples for around $5k.

oh im sure. I think I mean that a car like this is so appealing to me because its interesting and rare and didn't sell well, etc...a new Camaro is cool, but this is something you don't see everyday, which to an opponaut like me makes its far cooler.

Had an '03 W8 sedan... unbelievably high repair costs because of it's sheer complexity. To change a simple headlamp they have to disassemble the entire front end, among other expensive maintenance issues. Wish I did more research; would've gone with the 1.8T 5MT.
But I gotta say, what a car. Miss it so much.

The W8 is an amazing drive, but the operating costs are exotic-car high. Most independent shops can't or won't work on them, and VW dealers charge extra for any W8 or W12 cars, due to the incredibly tight engine bays. The insurance on these is stratospheric, too.
The 1.8t with a chip is actually a faster, better-balanced car, anyway. (I hate to admit that. The 1.8t should always loooze)

Two words in the form of a question: service history? If it has none run, if it has an extensive one then plausible only if the seller is willing to subject it to an independent PPI at your expense. You got me side tracked looking up noises the W8 makes. . .
